Choosing and placing litter boxes

Room, cleanliness and safe access matter more than appearance.

At a glance

A useful starting point is one tray per cat plus an extra, in separate locations.

What you can do

  1. Choose room to turn around and a low entry for cats with limited mobility.
  2. Separate trays from meals and noise; avoid clustering or blocked routes.
  3. Scoop regularly, wash trays and initially keep familiar litter.
Common mistakes

Do not punish accidents; a sudden change can have a medical cause.

When to seek help

Straining with little or no urine or apparent pain needs immediate veterinary care.
